Have you ever dreamed about waking up one morning to find yourself an international celebrity?
That is what happened to a Kingston basketball trainer this month after a youtube video of him outplaying an NBA professional scored over 4 million hits and brought him world-wide media attention.
Stuart Tanner, 28, challenged New Jersey Mets player Devin Harris to a one-on-one contest at a coaching session in Stockwell, while the star was in London for an exhibition match against the Miami Heat.
Filmed by his brother Greg, Stuart successfully defended against Harris before dribbling and scoring a clean shot. As the crowd cheered, he then passed the ball through the NBA star’s legs before scoring a second time.
The first Stuart knew about his new-found celebrity was after his brother uploaded the video onto youtube. “I went to bed one evening and the views on youtube were around 100,000. When I woke up in the morning I had a quick look and it was over 2.5 million. I couldn’t believe it, and refreshed the page about ten times to make sure it was right!”
Several National newspapers both here and in America ran the story, as did major television networks. But Stuart turned down an interview with the BBC World Service because his friends were taking him for celebratory drink.
Cameraman Greg, who graduated from Kingston University in 1999 and now runs basketball website basketball247.co.uk, said: “last week was crazy with all the media attention this thing got. Absolutely bananas!”
At first, Stuart’s mother Sue was unimpressed by her son’s achievement. But, Stuart said, “once journalists started turning up at her house … she started to understand what I did was quite good. She looked really happy and proud of me.”
Stuart said the experience has been good for him, but added: “I hope this doesn’t affect Devin too much and he can get back to killing guys on the court asap.”
