The Rose Theatre café bar hosted the launch party of Ripple 09, a book that showcases the creative writing of Kingston students last Thursday.
The invitation-only event was attended by all thirty contributors to the publication as well as literary enthusiasts, Kingston lecturers and RiverOnline. Publishing editor Blanka Biernat was pleased with the turn out and end result of the publication and said, “It’s much better than last year. I didn’t know there were so many talented writers in Kingston.” The annual publication, now in its fifth year, contains poems, flash fiction (stories of no more than 500 words) and short stories from students on the MA and BA in Creative Writing at Kingston University. Ripple 09 is also a collaborative effort with the MA students of Publishing and the Kingston Press. Senior Lecturer of the MA in Publishing, Alison Baverstock, complimented all involved and said, “It's an achievement for both the publishing and creative writing team.” Katie Cooper was on last year’s MA Publishing course and was also involved in this year’s and was excited with how it had evolved “to the next level”. Both Borders and John Lewis have promotional copies and the whole team is awaiting the decision as to whether they will stock the Ripple. There were four poets who gave readings during the afternoon, including MFA Creative Writing student, Guy De Ferrer, who recited Motor Vocal Tics; a poem inspired by research into the symptoms of Tourettes syndrome.
