Squatters occupying Raven’s Ait had a rude May Day awakening after police launched a pre-dawn raid to evict them from the island.
The operation to clear Raven’s Ait, which protestors seeking to set up an environmental centre had occupied since February, started at 4am and the last of the 23 squatters was removed at around 8am. Protestor Sirius Green said the police caught them by surprise: “They came so early that we could not use the defences. Most of the people were by the camp fire. People who tried to get to the tree house or tunnel were arrested.” Dylan Ross, 23, had been on the island preparing a Bank Holiday weekend fete: “I was asleep. They came with a helicopter, climbing police and about five boats. We were told to get our stuff and get on the boat. There was no force at all, but there were some people on the roof.” Kingston Council, which owns the island, obtained a possession order for the island at Kingston County Court on 19 March. A Council spokesperson said: “Since the Court hearing Kingston Council has instructed the squatters to comply with the Court Order and leave the island voluntarily. As the squatters continued to refuse to leave voluntarily, High Court Enforcement Officers were instructed to implement the terms of the County Court Order on Friday 1 May 2009.” The squatters claimed they had public support for their action and received 4000 visitors to the island. Leading squatter Phoenix said the group had offered to leave the island at a reasonable date, and criticised the council for using public money to evict them. However, Cllr Derek Osbourne, Leader of the Kingston Council cast doubt on the group’s environmental credentials after they ran up a £4000 electricity bill: “The contribution they have made to global warming has been to increase Kingston’s carbon footprint. Really you are dealing with people who want to live rent free. We now have to evaluate the damage the squatters have done.” A defiant Phoenix said he was “confident that the group will be back”, and said a steering committee will meet at Kingston University on 8 May to plan their next move. However, the Council warned that there would be full 24 hour security on the island, and that people entering the island without permission could be arrested under the terms of the writ.
