Kingston University’s women’s lacrosse team lost 18-6 to Chichester University whilst the men lost 6-5 at home to Brunel University on Wednesday.

Synne Johnsson, women’s captain, said “We did an amazing job Wednesday considering we played against experienced players and the team currently only has four players that have played a match before.

“I am excited for the rest of the season to see the team get better and next time we’ll beat them!”

Cougars had a bad start as Chichester scored in the first minute of play, followed by a second three minutes later. Emily Latham scored a consolation for the Cougars, but they went in 5-1 down.

Kingston’s fightback continued in the second with Sacha Boyko scoring a penalty and Emily Lathum scoring a brace to complete her hat-trick despite an injury inflicted by Chichester defence had her laid out on her back only moments earlier. Lathum went on to get a third and fourth but it was not enough.

Haydn Williams, the Cougar lacrosse coach remained optimistic saying “there’s a lot to work on but it was a good start to the term.”

The men’s team fared much better running Brunel close but still going down by the one goal.

Captain, Robert Nicoll, said ““We played a good game. The boys tried their hardest but it was tough with Chichester keeping possession. We are proud of our new boys in goal, Ted [Arunasalam] and Ben [Richmonds], and look forward to our next away match against Brighton.”

Alex Winton scored twice in the first quarter to send KU into an early lead but the cougars soon lost control during the second and third as sticks crossed and the game broke down with fouls becoming regular on both sides.

KU found themselves 5-2 behind going into the fourth. Although they picked up the pace, scored three goals and there were some good attacks initiated by Zack Fountain who regained possession for the team, Brunel scored the one goal they needed to seal the victory.
