Kingston University women’s football firsts got their first three points and clean sheet of the season by beating Essex University 2-0 at Tolworth Court.
“I’m so happy; I’ve been literally waiting for this. I knew it was going to come,” said the team’s captain, Florence Amess. “We’re getting better and better every week and if the weather was better we would be six or seven up.”
Charmaine True to form
Midfielder Charmaine True was Kingston’s man of the match as she scored both goals in the first half and also caused a lot of problems for the opposing defence with her dribbling abilities and footwork.
She missed a penalty however, which was won after an impressive run by Lynn Badu on the 40th minute.
Amess and Badu also had a great game with the captain winning a lot of battles in midfield and keeping possession for the hosts.
“Charmaine (True) has come on leaps and bounds putting them away. I’m really proud of everyone,” said the team’s captain.
Essex’s defence committed numerous mistakes in the first half but also had a couple of good chances on both respective halves.
Against the elements
The rain and heavy cold cooled down the rhythm of the game as it affected all players greatly. The wind was against Kingston’s side on second half but the players managed to keep the ball down and dominate the possession.
“I’m very pleased,” said Kingston’s coach, Sam Merison. “In the second half rather than us being under the cosh because of the wind we were actually getting the ball down and playing some nice football to get our first clean sheet of the season.
“Credit goes to the forward players for keeping the ball on the floor and keep passing it rather than trying to do high balls that could have got caught in today’s wind and rain.”
Amess believes this victory brought great confidence to the squad.
“We’re coming back. We’re climbing up the tables,” said Amess.
