What is Kate Nash Girl Talking about? Find out in our review of her new album.
James Garwood
She made a name for herself with the single Foundations and album Made of Bricks in 2007 and then followed up with My Best Friend is You in 2010. On the whole, Girl Talk is a different direction for Nash – a much more grown up sound.
New direction
Her girl-next-door singing style has developed into more of a shouty, shock style showcased in the songs Sister and Cherry Pickin’. However, it becomes a little dull and unnecessary when she breaks into a shouting rant in the middle of a song.
This new direction does not mean that long-standing Kate Nash fans will be lost. The cute You’re so Cool, I’m so Freaky and Deathproof would be very much at home on Made of Bricks, whilst Rap for Rejection and All Talk could be mistaken for My Best Friend is You bonus tracks.
Hauntingly brilliant
The best song is, without question, her brand new single 3am that will definitely be a summer hit. The weakest song is the easily forgettable Oh that never really gets going. It seems that her best work is shown in the shorter songs as the majority of the longer ones become boring and uninteresting mid-way through.
The last few songs on the album are some of the best and the last track Lullaby For An Insomniac is hauntingly brilliant. It shows that despite a few shouts and some feather ruffling lyrics at times, Nash really is one of the best singer-songwriters out there at the moment and is still fresh and original in her sound even after three albums.
