Kingston University men’s first football team suffered a huge blow at the mini-varsity when they lost 3-0 to the University of Roehampton’s first team at Tolworth Court sports ground.

The Cougars dominated possession and had more chances but were punished for not being clinical enough in front of goal.

After conceding early, the Cougars started to take control but were unable to level the game and Roehampton scored another goal towards half-time.

KU started the second half strongly and strengthened their attack but were not able to finish as they were frustrated by Roehampton’s stubborn defence.

The hosts came close to breaking their duck in the 65th minute with three consecutive shots on goal but were unable to penetrate the opponents’ wall.

Captain Oscar McMillan urged the team to push forward but as a result they left their defence open and conceded a third in the 85th minute.

Roehampton could have finished the game with a four-goal lead as KU conceded a free kick on the edge of the box in the dying seconds before the kick hit the wall and the referee blew the final whistle.

Despite the loss, KU put up a promising performance and will look to kick off their season on a winning note when they face University of Chichester’s fourth team at home on October 10.
