Chelsea beat Twente 6-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) to remain top of Group B.
The Blues dominated the game and comfortably reached their 14th win in 14 games in all competitions, while Twente remain third with three points.
“Always good for the confidence to score many goals where it is possible,” Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor said to The River during the post-match press conference. She added: “I think we could have scored a little bit more, we still have room for improvement in that area.”
Chelsea took the lead after two minutes when Catarina Macario made a shot which got blocked, she got the rebound and controlled the ball and made another shot which went over the goalkeeper and in the back of the net.
The Dutch champions equalised after Maika Hamano brought Charlotte Hustl down in the box with the German referee pointing to the spot and Kayleigh Van Dooren converted the penalty to the bottom left corner on the 29th minute.
Chelsea’s response was immediate with Oriane Jean-Francois scoring a minute later with a low strike, after a run on the left side of the box for her first UWCL goal.
Bompastor’s team got a third goal four minutes later, after Agnes Beever-Jones gained possession and passed it to Mayra Ramirez who saw the Twente goalkeeper Olivia Clark off her line and scored a beautiful goal from over 30 yards away after lobbing the goalkeeper.
Chelsea were unstoppable and made it four on the 38th minute after Erin Cuthbert was beaten in the one-on-one against Clark. Anna Knol tried to clear the ball but accidentally sent it to the back of her team’s net to make it 4-1 and Chelsea’s third goal in eight minutes.
Jean-Francois was forced off with an injury before the break after twisting her ankle but Bompastor claimed the injury is not serious.
“I spoke with her in the locker room, I think she is fine,” Bompastor said to The River. “It does not look too bad but we will assess her tomorrow again and see how we move forward,” she added.
The hosts scored again shortly after the break after substitute Sjoeke Nusken scored with a header after a cross by Hamano on the 47th minute.
Chelsea missed a lot of chances for a sixth goal but eventually got it on the 85th minute after Eve Perisset made the shot after a corner in the middle of the box to make it 6-1 for the London side.
Chelsea, who have already booked a place in the quarterfinals, now have 15 points after winning all their group stage matches and will face Real Madrid in Spain next week to determine who will finish first in the group.
Twente remain third with three points and will play their final UWCL away against Celtic on 17 December as they are out of contention for a knockout spot.
Chelsea now draw their attention to their Women’s Super League away fixture with Leicester City on 14 December while Twente will host Zwolle on the same day for the Eredivisie.
