On 16 March at 2.20pm, firefighters were called to a major fire on Richmond Road in Kingston upon Thames.
The London Fire Brigade deployed around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines to tackle the blaze, which surrounded a Grade II-listed former cinema and bingo hall.
Kingston University student Mark Davies said: “I’ve never seen anything like it, the smoke was overwhelming.”
No injuries have been reported, but the extent of the damage is still being assessed, while local businesses have also been affected.
The London Ambulance Service later released a statement, telling people to stay away from the area and advising nearby residents to keep windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation risks.
“It was absolutely terrifying,” added Sarah Thompson, a local resident.
Emergency services cordoned off the area, which led to major traffic disruption along Richmond Road.
Witnesses also reported hearing loud cracking noises as parts of the structure collapsed.
“I used to walk past this building every day—it’s devastating to see it burn,” said Kingston resident James Carter.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with initial reports suggesting the affected building has been vacant for years.
Station commander Will Thompson later said: “Crews are making steady progress in tackling the fire.”
The fire was eventually deemed “under control” at around 6:44pm.
