KU launches Art Exhibition for Lunar New Year

Studio KT1 is back for a third year with their annual Lunar New Year Art Exhibition, held at Cass Art’s Kingston Art Space.

Introspective Currents features fine art in different mediums from 15 East Asian and Southeast Asian KU students and graduates.

“It’s an exhibition that is not so much the stereotypical imagery we see around the time of Lunar New Year but its more introspective as the name suggests,” said Alice Torres, Studio KT1’s Innovative Partnership Coordinator.

“It’s more about the artists individual experiences of the world.”

Lunar New Year is a festival celebrating the start of the new year on the lunisolar calendar which is followed across East and Southeast Asia.

“It’s been a nice way to have representation, and it also echoes the fact that specifically in KSA there is a really large part of the student body that is Asian. It’s been really nice to start a new tradition and have that kind of visibility to Asian students in a way that isn’t so stereotypical,” Torres continued.

Established in 2019 and led by Kingston University students, Studio KT1 is a creative agency based within KU, giving creative students the chance to gain hands-on work experience.

“We have a curation panel that the first two years were in collaboration with fine art lecturers. This year was curated by two Studio KT1 Staff members Louise Dukes and myself and two curation students Iris Chou and Cecilia Gu,” added Torres.

To celebrate the start of the Lunar New Year on the 17 February Studio KT1 are hosting a private viewing event with exclusive 20% shopping discount at Cass Art for all KU students with a valid ID from 5-8pm.

Introspective Currents is available to view by anyone free of charge from the 1 – 25 February and can be found at Cass Art, 103 Clarence St, Kingston upon Thames KT1 1QY.
