Kingston’s rowing club was denied the chance to take part in the annual head of the river race as it was cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

The race was due to take place on March 23 2013 however organisers chose not to go ahead with the event based on weather predictions causing the race to be unsafe, meaning there will be no race at all this year.

The official website for the Head of the River Race said: “The Committee of the Head of the River Race regrets to advise that the 2013 Race on Saturday 23rd March has been cancelled.

“After detailed consultation and consideration of the weather forecasts, the Committee consider the river conditions over parts of the course could be unsafe due to the expected strong easterly winds throughout the day.”

The race is one of the events in London with the highest participation, with over 400 crews of eight rowing from Mortlake to Putney.

This year’s race was scheduled to kick off at 12.45pm on March 23, however following the cancellation it will not be rescheduled and rowing teams will have to wait until next year to participate.

”We very much regret the inconvenience caused to all competitors and supporters as a result of this decision, and thank you for your strong support of our event. We hope we can welcome you back in 2014,” said the committee on their official website.
