Coach Gideon Jackson (top left) and his in form Futsal team who are scoring for fun

It was a tough week for Kingston’s sports teams this week as several exited their respective cup competitions at the first hurdle while some suffered setbacks in the league.

It was not all doom and gloom though as the women’s football team picked up their first win of the season and the badminton men picked up a convincing and much needed victory.

Meanwhile, one team just keeps rolling on and on, making it four wins from four for the season at the weekend with a scarcely believable scoreline.

Football

It was a miserable day for the men’s first team as they were knocked out in the second round of the cup against Brighton.

The team felt hard done by to be trailing 2-0 at half time as they felt both goals were the direct results of poor refereeing. The team’s second half performance was an improvement but they were unable to find the net and the score stayed at 2-0.

The second team will also have no further involvement in their plate tournament as they were eliminated on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

There is still cup football for Kingston this year, however, as the women grounded out a 1-0 win over Imperial to make it through to the next round where they will be away to Royal Holloway.

Story of the week

Kingston University’s highest ranked sports team returned to action at the weekend as the American football team welcomed last year’s champion’s, Birmingham Lions, to Tolworth.

The team knew this would be their hardest test all season but could not have envisaged the first half going quite as badly for them as they went found themselves 24-0 at the half.

A stirring second half comeback from the Cougars added some respectability to the scoreline (13-30) and will hope to take the blueprint from that half into the game against Swansea on Sunday.

Performance of the week

Kingston’s newly formed Futsal team are making BUCS sport look easy and frankly seem to be getting better every week.

Last time the team played at home they put 11 past Brunel. Well, Brunel might count themselves lucky after seeing what coach Gideon Jackson’s team did to Roehampton last Sunday, humiliating their local rivals 21-2 to cement their place at the top of the league.

The team have now won four out of four this season including two wins on the road where they will be again on Sunday against Imperial College London who will not be looking forward to Kingston’s free-scoring Cougars walking through their doors.
