KU professor develops 3D selfie app

By Oct 10, 2017

Dr Vasileios Argyriou, a Kingston University professor, has been part of a team developing an app that can turn ordinary 2D pictures of faces into 3D images.

The team spent 9 months and used over 80,000 faces to teach the system how to automatically recognise a person’s features.

This technology has several uses, such as animation, special effects and games. Argyriou argues that the main purpose is for security.

“So if the police want to identify a person in the crowd, you can quickly reconstruct a picture of a face, because it works not only from the front, but from various angles,” he said.

The app will debut at the International Conference on Computer Vision in Venice later this month.
