Kingston University Men’s football team have swapped their football boots for running trainers in an attempt to stay fit during the second lockdown.

The sports club are using the running app Strava to log their runs. The popular app recorded a 300 per cent increase in usage during the first lockdown according to Mobile network EE.

A leaderboard has been set up to promote competition within the team who have collectively racked up just under 300KM in seven days.

President of Kingston University Football club, Lewis Anderson, said: “It’s great to see so many of our players getting involved and running. Sport is so important for not only our physical fitness but also our mental health too.”

“We set up the running group to keep everyone connected through these extremely challenging times. To make things competitive we are offering prizes to those who finish first, second and third.”

Kingston had started the season well winning both games against Roehampton and London School of Economics before restrictions forced them to stop all matches and training.

Anderson said: “We had a fantastic start to the season so having to stop has frustrated us all. We are trying to do as much as we can so we can go straight into playing after this lockdown.”

Once the four-week lockdown is over, the teams will be hoping to fit in at least one more friendly before the winter break.
