Kingston Ladies thrash Surrey

By James Baines

Bad weather could not stop the rot for Surrey as Kingston Ladies first team cruised to victory in their second league game.

Kingston applied pressure straight from the kick off, with midfielder Ana Rodriguez quickly making her mark on the game. She dominated the midfield with a graceful touch and inspired vision to play ball after ball in behind Surrey’s fullbacks.

However, the Cougars’ hard work and constant pressure was undone when after 15 minutes a high defensive line allowed Surrey to put a ball over the top for their striker to finish deftly one on one with the Kingston goalkeeper.

Looked fierce

Leading by example, team captain Becky Tansey looked fierce down the left wing. After receiving a delicate pass from Rodriguez she slipped an inside pass into striker Sue Wynes who put a low cross to right winger Christina Fredriksen who tapped home the equaliser.

The inevitability of the second goal was apparent; the style in which it was scored was not. Rodriguez provided the through ball and Wynes lofted a shot from outside of the box into the top corner.

Exquisite finish

With the game getting more congested, strength on the ball by right back Lianne Davidson allowed her to put a ball over Surrey’s back four and Fredriksen repaid the favour for her equaliser by putting through their striker, whose exquisite finish left the Surrey keeper picking the ball out of the bottom left corner.

Not content at being two goals up, Kingston pressed harder. Two minutes later Kingston’s left back fizzed a cross into the box for Tansey, to deservedly tap home Kingstons fourth.

After conceding a penalty in the second half, Kingston put the game to bed, as substitute Naomi Ponting finished the game off late in the second half. With a powerful strike from 18 yards out, she beat the Surrey keeper at her near post.

With two wins out of two under their belt and a togetherness that Surrey could only admire, Kingston certainly look like a force to be reckoned with.
