Why should love only be celebrated if it is romantic? Love can be platonic, and platonic love is just as important. It’s what forms bonds between people who aren’t sexually attracted to each other. Galentine’s Day was created to celebrate this friendship between girls and women, honouring what it means to appreciate one another.

Galentine’s Day sparked from Parks and Recreation where the character Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) created a holiday on 13 February to celebrate her female friendships, where they indulged in waffles and gift giving. This quickly gained popularity world-wide, and before we know it, it became a phenomenon.
While Parks and Recreation is where Galentines day gained widespread recognition, the idea of celebrating female friendships has been around for much longer. It taps into deep-rooted human connection that helps navigate life, connections that are often overlooked in favour of romantic relationships.
“Me and my girls make sure to celebrate it every year and usually I host it a day before valentines”, Naomi Konare, a graduate from Reading university explains why she thinks it’s important to not only show affection towards romantic partners, but also step back and celebrate people who have been there for you without expectation.
For many, Galentines day is about gathering with friends to enjoy good food and heartfelt conversations. Some may host brunches or potluck style meals, while others opt for nights filled with Netflix marathons and cozy chats.
“Sometimes the girls come over for brunch…its an excuse to dress up and do something girly, especially since as you get older, I think we have less time for our friends with work and other commitments, so celebrating Galentines means you get together and just have a wholesome time with your friends.”
Samia Ahad, is a third year student at Kingston University, studying architecture, isn’t crazy about celebrating Valentine’s Day itself. However, around the time she will get together with her best friends and do “girly stuff”. “I value platonic love, but, I’ve never put it aside as a day to celebrate because I’m always hanging in out with my friends.”
Similarly, Zuzanna Alskin, third year architecture student, says that its important to recognise and appreciate the people who support you outside of romantic relationships.
The beauty of Galentines day lies in its inclusivity. It’s not just for those in romantic relationships, but for anyone who cherishes the deep, nurturing friendships that are the foundation of personal growth.
As Galentines day continues to grow in popularity, its message is clear: the bonds of friendship are just as important as any romantic connection. Whether you are enjoying waffles with friends, making arts and crafts or simply sending a heartfelt text to your girlfriends, Galentines Day is a reminder that true love isn’t about romance, but about the powerful love we share with those who are there for us everyday.
