Review: Josh Kumra – Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait

By River Reporter Apr 21, 2013

He’s already had chart-topping success featuring on Wretch 32’s number one single Don’t Go, but now Josh Kumra is back with his debut album.

After being catapulted into the spotlight in 2011, Swindon-born singer Josh Kumra has been touring with the likes of Labrinth, Gabrielle Aplin and One Republic. But most importantly he’s been working on his debut album Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait.

Inspired by Tracy Chapman, Jeff Buckley, Bob Marley and Ray Lamontagne, the album has elements of blues, folk, pop, acoustic roots and soul.

Soulful and smooth

The highlight of the album has to be Brave Face. The soulful and smooth ballad highlights the 21-year-old’s vocal ability and writing prowess.

Waiting For You is another emotion-filled track where his passionate lyrics shine through again. I can already hear “I’ll be right here” being chanted at all his future shows.

However, the most anticipated song of the album is obviously Don’t Go. Josh co-wrote and provided vocals for Wretch 32’s version, which topped the charts in 2011, but his solo version is just as good – if not better. Although Wretch 32 fans may find themselves rapping his part over the top of Josh’s slower and more relaxed verses.

Collaborations with Emeli Sande and Mr Hudson

With songwriting and production collaborations from Fink, Emeli Sande, Naughty Boy and Mr Hudson the album has a lot of promise. But sadly the album lacks that one outstanding song which has the potential to win some awards. Instead the tracks all seem to blend into one.

It certainly won’t feature among the best debut albums this year but for a first album it definitely shows promise. So keep your eyes peeled for more from this talented singer.

Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait is out Monday April 22 or you can preorder it now from iTunes.

And don’t forget to check out The River this Friday for an exclusive interview with Josh Kumra.
