KU scholar’s deportation to US complete

A Shakespeare scholar and Rose Theatre enthusiast who was set to study at Kingston University has been deported, despite calls from academics to end deportations proceedings.

Dr Hamilton, 42, was in the process of applying to a fellowship he hoped would be hosted by Kingston University, when he was detained for overstaying in the UK.

Dr Hamilton, who has now been deported to the US and has missed out on the fellowship, said: “I worked on the application for months and tried my best to get it together [in prison] but I couldn’t have access to my research, and without that it just couldn’t be done.”

The US citizen had been running conferences for the Kingston Shakespeare seminar at the Rose Theatre, which aims to make it a world centre for Shakespeare study and performance.
