Looking to study film with a twist? Look no further than KU’s new Film Cultures degree

As well as looking at traditional film, the course will also focus on music videos, apps, animation, viral clips and advertising.

KU has introduced a degree in Film Cultures for the next academic year, which merges creative and theoretical study.

The BA will focus on film in relation to other subjects and media forms, such as the connections between film and fashion, and design and visual art.

Professor of film and cultural studies, Will Brooker, said: “The BA Film Cultures is for students who want a career in the film and media industries, but who aren’t necessarily interested in being behind the camera.

“It combines academic study with professional practice to train students for jobs like film curation, archiving, festival programming and reviewing.”

As well as looking at traditional film, the course will also focus on music videos, apps, animation, viral clips and advertising, alongside practical writing projects such as blogs, reviews and thought-pieces.

“I think degrees solely focused on studying film, in isolation, are less relevant to today’s students. That’s not the way we experience film in the 21st century.

“You can’t fully study a Marvel blockbuster movie without also thinking about television shows, comic books, social media fandom, memes, and cosplay, for instance,” Brooker said.

The new BA follows the faculty’s move from the Department of Film and Photography to Kingston School of Art and will be taught at Knights Park campus, starting September 2019.
