Kingston University’s Mouth magazine won second place at the Guardian Student Media Awards on Wednesday, after a great night for the KU journalism department.
The magazine made by MA students, narrowly missed out on the publication of the year award losing to five times winner, The York Vision newspaper.
Richard Williams, one of the editors of Mouth magazine, said: “We are ecstatic. We would have loved to have won, but we have proved we are among the best in the country. It’s a great tribute to the team.”
The star studded award ceremony in central London saw the best of student journalism across the country celebrated, with publications from Imperial College London and Oxford also vying for the title.
Michelle Hather, who leads the magazine course, said: “The judges said they were looking for ideas they would want to steal and that is what we wanted to do, make it witty.”
The River, who won last year, was placed in the top five out of over 650 entries, while first year student Dylan Lowe, was nominated for the digital journalist of the year award.
River editor, Mary Hickey said: “We produced some great editions and I’m so proud of what we achieved.”
Among the judges were The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Channel 4 presenter Jon Snow, Times columnist Caitlin Moran and BBC 1 news journalist Susanna Reid.
