Pickles to Pringles: KU students confess their weird (but wonderful) Nutella combos for World Nutella Day

With World Nutella Day finished and done, Kingston University students have proven that the well-known chocolate-hazelnut spread is far more versatile than just a simple layer on top of toast.  Students have confessed their guilty pleasures, combining sweet, savoury and sour into surprisingly creative, and delicious, Nutella pairings.

Leading the way is third-year KU student Adwaitha, who confessed that her guilty pleasure is through taking a sweet and sour approach through her love for Nutella and…pickles. The crunch of the sour pickles, alongside the smooth creaminess of the spread makes it have a strangely addictive taste that she fell in love with. I too, decided to try this funky combination, and my tastebuds defy me – it’s genuinely better than it sounds.

Up next is Thea , who keeps things homely with her mum’s famous chocolate gooey Nutella cakes topped with fresh raspberries. The rich chocolatey sponge combined with the warm gooey Nutella filling and topped off with the sharpness of the fruit creates what she describes as the, “perfect balance” that “instantly reminds me of my childhood, that now I’ve brought to uni”, a dessert that will always hit the spot, even during peak deadline season.

For a more fun yet questionable combo, third year Fashion student Oliwia dips her Nutella into fries. Whilst chocolate with fries might sound questionable to some, she insists it beats the, “milkshake and fries combination by a mile!”. She tells the River, “I saw someone try this on TikTok not long ago, and I thought I’d give it a try.”

Now for a similar, yet still bold combo (which I again had to try in the name of research) – dipping ready salted Pringles into Nutella. That mix of salty and sweet, alongside the crispiness of the Pringles, is definitely a combination I can get behind (and is now one of my go-to snacks!).

Finally, Steph keeps things slightly ‘healthy’ by dipping apple slices into Nutella. The juiciness of the fresh fruit paired with the creamy spread gives a great balance between healthy and indulgent, whilst also keeping guilt-free.

From childhood recipes to sour pickles, Kingston University students are proving that food comes with no rules. If World Nutella hasn’t only given you some new combinations to try, it also shown that the weirdest combinations might just be the best ones.
