Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

By Oct 4, 2012

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming-of-age movie that captures the highs and lows of teenagers entering adulthood where Steven Chbosky, director and screenwriter of the film, is responsible for the creation of a modern classic.

The film stars Harry Potter’s Emma Watson  as Sam, Logan Lerman as Charlie and Ezra Miller as Patrick.

Chbosky captures the heavy subjects of psychological health, sexual abuse and homosexuality with a tactful sensitivity, all while still throwing in a dash of humour.

Throughout The Perks of Being a Wallflower, shy quiet Charlie writes letters to an anonymous person about significant parts of his life and wants nothing more than to fit in and make friends.
Encouraged by his English teacher and taken under the wing of a gay senior classmate, Patrick, and his step-sister, Sam, he is soon pulled back into the real world.

It is hard not to be inspired when Charlie said: “I feel infinite,” while driving through a Pittsburgh tunnel in one climactic scene to an appropriately-chosen mesmerizing tune.

Heart wrenching and moving with its troubled characters and authenticity the experience will leave you with shivers and recollections of your own wallflower past.
