Saw (2004)
Before the needless sequels and the jumping of the shark, Saw was a brave indie smash hit. The movie was directed by James Wan who would later go on to work on the Fast and Furious, Conjuring and Aquaman. After watching Saw, you’ll be amazed that the movie was put together on a shoestring budget of fewer than one million dollars.
The plot of the movie follows two men who are trapped in a remote lair. The pair of unfortunate protagonists must play sadistic mind games to escape their capture from the villainous Jigsaw killer. Saw is, without doubt, a horror classic and the original is by far the best of the franchise. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you to check it out this Halloween.
Get Out (2017)
As October is Black History Month, it would be a disservice not to mention Jordan Peele’s 2017 blockbuster Get Out. The movie is an inversion of the “guess who’s coming to dinner” Hollywood cliché, turning it on its head for modern times.
The plot sees Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) uncovering a conspiracy against the local black community in his girlfriend’s town. Get Out features genuinely scary moments, well-directed suspense and a healthy dose of comedy. Get Out is the perfect horror black comedy this year.
Seven (1995)
David Fincher’s Seven is a psychological ride like no other. Starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as a pair of opposing detectives trying to solve John Doe murder cases.
Seven features many twists and unexpected moments throughout. Seven is a must-watch if you haven’t checked it out already, the ending alone will keep your head spinning for days.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost star in the first film of the Cornetto movie trilogy. Directed by acclaimed Scott Pilgrim, Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead sees a group of friends battle their way through a zombie apocalypse.
For those who aren’t into anything too serious of nerve-shattering, Shaun of the Dead is the movie for you, filled with laughs throughout as it satirises and deconstructs the horror genre.
Final Destination (2000)
Final Destination took the world by storm when it was released at the turn of the century. This movie stands out as it sees our main characters fighting fate itself with no monster, creature or killer at all.
The plot follows a group of teens who miss their fight as one of the kids has a premonition before the flight. As the plane ascends into the sky, it explodes, leaving the group of friends with survivors’ guilt. The movie sees the teens battle fate itself as they get picked off one by one in strange and unique ways.
