During dry January it is still very important to socialise, but because student life is so booze-heavy it can be difficult to avoid.
Over the past few years, there have been alcohol-free bars and pubs opening and the River asked 35 students their thoughts.
A surprising 25 out of 35 students said that they would try an alcohol-free pub or bar. With lots of students agreeing that an alcohol-free environment would be calmer and safer.
One student said: “If it was just less rowdy but still cosy pub vibes that would be great.”
Multiple students agreed that they liked the sound of an alcohol-free pub or bar but thought that the atmosphere could be an issue.
“I don’t think it would be the same atmosphere, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing.” Furthermore, this student said that it might reduce violence and aggression.
Those that would not visit an alcohol-free bar or pub compared them to cafes and thought that “it’s a bit pointless” and “you go to a bar to drink”.
One student liked the idea, but thought it would be difficult to engage students: “I think there would have to be some extra incentives to get most uni students in the door. Something to keep people coming in and spending time since they won’t be drinking.”
