The River’s Oscar predictions

By Joe Barclay Feb 22, 2015

Tonight will be the 87th Annual Academy Awards and there is a lot of speculation as to what will win, especially in the main three catergories: best actor, best actress and best film.

Best Actor:

The best actor award could easily go to any of those nominated. Benedict Cumberbatch’s thrilling and shocking portrayal of Alan Turing’s life, Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle- the legendary American sniper, Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of Stephen Hawkin or Michael Keaton’s brillaint Birdman.

Who we think should win: Michael Keaton (Birdman)

Who we think will win: Bradley Cooper (American Sniper)

Best Actress

The award for best actress seems almost set in stone already with Julianne Moore being the winner for her performance in Still Alice, where she plays a university lecturer coping with early onset Alzheimer’s. Despite the result being almost a forgone conclusion, it is possible that Rosamund Pike’s vicious role in Gone Girl could be a surprise winner.

Best Picture

There are two clear front-runners for Best Picture, Boyhood and Birdman, although the other contenders are mostly brilliant films they aren’t really in contention. It is difficult to pick between the two films. Birdman has already won many top honours and seems likely to take the statue but the concept and direction of Boyhood are more than deserving of the Oscar. There is also a slim possibility that The Grand Budapest Hotel could be a surprise winner. As with every year, the films in competition are all deserving of the award but are face with such high calibre opponents.
