How to safely revise in the KU library

By Oct 9, 2020

Kingston University libraries have changed a lot since coronavirus began, so here is some information to let you know what has changed since last year.

Limited seating: Although you are still able to enter the libraries, a limited number of people are allowed to enter at once as the seating is socially distanced. There isn’t a lot of room for people to sit down and work the on different floors.

Group study rooms closed: The separate rooms which are used for quiet working have been closed because of the risk of transmitting the virus, however, there are big tables on each floor.  They have green stickers on every other seat, which show that people can still work together as long as they follow the government rules.

No book browsing: The most obvious thing that has changed since last year is that now you are no longer able to physically pick up a book from the library and read it. All bookshelves have red and white tape across and information boards telling you how to view the library collection.

No laptop or MacBook loans: One of the biggest changes that will affect a lot of students is that the library is no longer loaning out laptops to students that can’t afford one or may need a MacBook to access certain software. Luckily, the university has launched the digital support scheme for KU students who are digitally disadvantaged. To apply for the scheme, you have to meet the criteria which can be viewed on this website and applications must be in by the deadline of October 30. For more information please contact achievement@kingston.ac.uk.

Cafe still open: Not everything has changed, however, as the cafes on both the ground floor and the rooftop are still open and seating is available, although normal government restrictions do still apply. Takeout and eat-in options are available and the menu is not limited.

Click and collect service: This service operates at all of the KU libraries and is an alternative solution to the usual book loaning service. To take a book out of the library, you have to visit icat.kingston.ac.uk and you can select up to eight books at a time. Then you select a collection time and date from any KU campus and arrange to pick up your order from the library. Remember to bring your confirmation email and your KU card when arriving to collect your books.

For more information about the click and collect service please visit MyKingston.

You MUST wear a mask in the library at all times.
