Kingston University students share their dating app disasters

Student using Tinder

Tinder, Hinge, PlentyofFish… how far we will go to find love? I am sure we’ve all had our fair share of awkward first dates. KU students share their awkward, funny and slightly tragic first date tales.

“I was speaking to a guy from Tinder for a while and we were both pretty broke so we walked around a park for our first date. He was very affectionate and it seemed to be going really well! It started raining and he needed to use the bathroom so we walked into a nearby shopping centre. On our way out, I thought he was being a gentleman and said “ladies first” whilst directing me towards the escalator. I was facing down the escalator and as I turned around to say something, I noticed he was gone. He had literally vanished. I tried to call him but he completely ignored me and I cried on the bus home. It’s not all bad though, I met my current boyfriend of three years on Tinder!” – Erin, 20

“I went on a date with a Greggs manager and met him at the store as he had to close the shop first. I spoke to him whilst he cashed up, and then he left to go to the back room. I went to use the toilet and my mum called me, so I took a while. By the time I got out, all of the lights were off and the door shutters were down – I was locked inside. Turns out, he’d told me to wait outside and thought I’d left! I had to spam him on Tinder to come back and let me out.” – Meg, 20

“I met up with a girl from Hinge. She was lovely and we got on well so we went out for a few drinks, but suddenly she went from 0 to 100 and became really drunk. She cried to me about her ex-boyfriend for about an hour, so I walked her to the bus stop as it got very awkward. When we got there, she threw up all over my shoes. There wasn’t a second date.” – Jack, 21

“I went on a date with someone I met on OkCupid. He was a bit weird in person but I thought he might have been nervous. We bumped into his cousin on the date and he introduced me as his girlfriend which was very strange. He needed to go into GAME to pick something up and the guy who served us was a guy I’d been on a date with a few weeks before, who’d ignored all my messages afterwards. He looked us both up and down and said “Hi Laura, hope your date is going better than ours! Do you have your loyalty card?” The guy I was with ended up guilt-tripping me for that awkward situation and wouldn’t let me leave! Needless to say, there wasn’t a second date.” – Laura, 23
