Where to eat in Kingston: A student’s guide 2023

Calling all student foodies, Kingston has a diverse and booming restaurant scene from wining and dining Japanese style to classic British pub grub. Here is our round up of restaurants best for student dining with generous happy hours and discounts.

Bill’s 

2 Riverside Walk, KT1 1QN

Bill’s serves delicious affordable food with a beautiful view of the Thames. Known for their flavourful breakfast menu you can grab bottomless buttermilk pancakes topped with bacon or fruit for only £7.50 or devour a traditional full English breakfast for £10.75. Students can also get a 20% discount with UNiDAYS from Sunday to Friday. Be warned the restaurant gets very busy, so you may need to book a table in advance, particularly in the morning.

Franco Manca

55 Clarence Street

With one of the best student discounts around, UNiDAYS has an an offer for a full pizza and a soft drink for under £10 (the homemade lemonade is a must), or you can upgrade to a glass of wine for just £11.95. An airy but homely ambience in the pizzeria gives an authentic Italian vibe away from the bustle of the high street, as you watch the chef roll the dough and fire up the large sourdough pizzas in the open kitchen.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen

This tasty burger chain deserves an honourable mention for its tender and freshly prepared patties. Meat lovers can select how they would like their burger cooked, while vegans have a good choice of plant-based options. Students are also awarded a 20% discount through Student Beans. For those who want a night in with something other than a Big Mac, GBK also offers delivery on both Uber Eats and Just Eat.

Wildwood

2-6 High Street

This pizza, pasta and grill restaurant offers amazing discounts for students and seasonal menus. With UNiDAYS you can get 20% off food or a main, side and drink for just £10-£12. The menu has all sorts of calzones, pastas, salads, artisan pizzas and much more. Favourites include their new calzone with prosciutto cotto ham, peppers, onion, olives, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce and pesto and the classic spaghetti carbonara.

YO!

The Bentall Centre

Monday night dinner is sorted this month with YO! offering 50% off after 5pm. The rest of the week students can grab a 20% discount on food with UNiDAYS. If you have never dined in at a YO!, it is definitely an experience to have. Your food gets delivered on a conveyor belt in true high-tech Japanese style. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert when visiting, their mochi selection and fluffy dorayaki pancakes are not to be missed.

Farm Fresh Burgers & Shakes

15 Penrhyn Road

If you don’t know get to know! This cosy little restaurant beside the Penrhyn campus is the perfect after-lecture treat. Usually quiet this is the perfect place to relax or grab shakes and study. The restaurant is Halal certified, while offering a selection of delicious burgers, sliders, wraps and more. We think you can’t go wrong with their ‘Crispy Legend Burger’. Uber Eats and Just Eat offer delivery but you can grab student discount in-store so bring along your Kingston ID.

Little Hunan 

51 Surbiton Road, KT1 2HG

For fans of authentic Chinese food and hot pots, Little Hunan offers a hugely extensive menu with something to suit everyone’s tastes and is under a two-minute walk from Penrhyn Road, perfect for those in between lecture breaks. The prices are affordable and the portion sizes are more than generous. You will need to hit the ATM before visiting as the restaurant is cash only.
