KU weekly sports roundup

It was a fantastic week for Kingston’s sports teams. In the last week of the season for the last remaining teams, the men’s hockey team and women’s tennis and badminton teams all won their last games to win their leagues.

Performance of the week

The women’s tennis team beat third placed St Mary’s University 8-4 away to win the BUCS South Eastern 4A league.

Before the game they were top, level on points with Roehampton University but had a higher goal difference, so only had to avoid losing by eight points but beat St Mary’s to finish top with 17 points, three away from Roehampton.

Captain Lucy Carpenter said: “It was a really good contest. I am so proud to have had such an amazing bunch of girls on my team. We truly deserved to win the league and I am a very proud captain!”

Story of the week

The men’s hockey team won the BUCS South Eastern 3A league by beating Royal Holloway, University of London 1-0.

They are now getting promoted into the league they got promoted into two years ago, but relegated from last year, so some players in the squad have experienced promotion twice.

Player and President of the team, Josh Barron said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic. A bit knackered, a lot of legwork but it’s been a very, very long season. A lot of hard work has gone into it. I’m pleased for the leavers because they’ve had the experience of going up before and this is the second time they’ve done it.

“It wasn’t the greatest game to watch but we weren’t’ expecting it to be a showpiece, we were expecting it to be a tough game and that was what we got.”
